About the Independent Reading List

When it comes to the education of a child, reading is the main thing. In fact, many would say teaching and improving reading skills is the purpose of education. A student’s reading skill affects performance in math, science, history, and all other subjects. Most successful upper school students are well-read. Since reading is a skill, it is important that it is practiced. Students should have a book they are reading all the time. MCA Grammar recommends that students read at home every weekday. We feel so strongly about this that we make it a separate daily assignment. Students are asked to read a book of their choosing for 20 minutes each weekday. For this reading at home, we have compiled a list of excellent novels divided into approximate reading grade levels. Students are free to choose books from any of the grade levels. We provide the list as a help to students and parents in selecting books of good quality, but families are not restricted to only these books.

The books can be found at the Midland Public Library, Sonlight Curriculum, Veritas
Press, Amazon, Mardel, Barnes & Noble, and CBD.
